ABOUT SHORT BACK & SIDEWALKS
Short Back & Sidewalks create positive connections by giving free haircuts to vulnerable and marginalised people across Australia making them feel seen, heard, and valued.
Its founder, Craig Hollywood, started the initiatives 8 ½ years ago in Perth in March 2015. The first haircuts took place in a car park behind a shopping arcade in the Perth CBD.
It was a simple setup for a simple idea that has gone on to grow and inspire. Craig was named Australian of the Year Western Australia’s Local Hero 2022 for this initiative, and was recently named AHIA’s Humanitarian of the Year.
With award-winning salons and hairdressers in their volunteer community, Short Back & Sidewalks are on a mission to deliver 15,000 free haircuts by 2025.

“Through SBSW, we’ve had the opportunity to work alongside some of Australia’s best hairdressers and barbers, bringing dignity and visibility to some of our society's most marginalized members. We see it as our duty to play it forward and contribute to the well-being of our community. If you’re passionate about making a difference, I encourage you to get involved by volunteering your time or simply spreading the word. Together, we can improve our community, one haircut at a time. ✂️💛”
